Welcome to our BR-H Web-site! I felt it was time to share some of the things that are happening in education from our school perspective. I'm superintendent of the Bark River - Harris School's, Russ Pirlot. I wanted to provide a few facts about our school and invite you to visit with us. 1. BR-H School is one of the only school's in the Upper Peninsula that has grown or maintained our student population over the past 10 years. 2. Our enrollment this fall was 666 students. Our elementary school had 372 students with a choice of teachers at each grade level and an average class size of 24. Our middle school had 105 students and our high school 189. 3. Our operating budget is approximately $5,200,000.00 with a projected fund balance of $1,300,000.00. 4. Our entire staff meet Highly Qualified requirements. This is no small task with the demands of our State of Michigan. This requirement includes our support staff meeting state requirements also. 5. We offer credit recovery classes for those students who will have difficulty passing the new, very challenging curriculum. This area we will soon have additional information for you on our high school principal's site. 6. We offer a variety of classes at all levels including a new Spanish curriculum and many new technology changes which are in the planning stages. 7. We provide bussing into various areas of our surrounding communities; centralized pick ups have proven very effective when possible, we are willing to discuss your needs. 8. We provide specialized teachers for each of what we refer to as special classes: ex. Art, music, physical education, band, Spanish, technology, etc. These are classes offered at all grade levels, except Spanish and band is offered at grades 5 and 6 on up. 9. We have many extra curricular opportunities: ex. basketball, football, track, golf, volleyball, cheerleading, soccer, wrestling, and archery. We are adding a competitive dance program. We have several clubs that students can participate in also. 10. We graduated 44 students last year, a very high percentage have continued into higher education. 11. Several of our juniors and seniors, in good academic standing, have an opportunity to take college courses or vocational education courses that we do not offer. Because these are areas of interest for our students, we pay for these students classes at institutions like Bay De Noc Community College or other institutions that meet their higher educational needs. Last year we we spent over $91,000.00 to support student education outside of our district. School's of Choice is closed now. We typically do not offer a second opportunity for School's of Choice students beyond the fall. Based on the difficult economic conditions we may consider reopening Schools of Choice in January. The only other way to join us is with permission from your attending superintendent and consent from our school. Thank you for visiting our web-site. I wish you a great year. We welcome you to come and visit our small school that provides big results. We would very much enjoy you being a part of the successful educational programs offered at Bark River - Harris Schools. Come join our team! Respectfully, Russ Pirlot, Superintendent |
